They may show it in their own unique way, but there are few fan bases with more passion than the Philadelphia Eagles. Some might say Eagles fans are missguided in how they display their enthusiasm – as evidenced by the infamous Santa Claus snowball incident – but with a fan base that passionate, it’s impossible to deny that the Eagles are something special.

Division of Hate

Since 1970, the Eagles have made their home in the NFC East alongside some of their most bitter rivals. The division is almost defined by hate, as all four teams have such intense disdain for one another. The rivalry between the Eagles and the Giants is one of the oldest in the NFL, dating all the way back to 1933, the team’s inaugural season. The Eagles also have an in-state rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers that goes back to when both teams were founded in 1933. The fact that the two franchises combined to form one team during the 1943 season did little to propagate friendly relations between the two Pennsylvania teams.

Philadelphia’s rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys hasn’t been around as long, but the conflict runs just as deep. Even when the NFL finally organized divisions in a way that made sense geographically, the Cowboys remained in the NFC East to keep bitter rivalries alive. As they say… keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

There’s also no shortage of disdain between the Eagles and Washington Redskins, a rivalry that includes a 1990 incident when the Eagles knocked eight Washington players out of a single game due to injury.

Worth the Wait

During the pre-Super Bowl era, the Eagles were winners of three NFL titles. However, it took them until the 2017 season to finally win a Super Bowl ring. There’s been no shortage of playoff appearances during the team’s history, including a run of nine playoff appearances in 11 seasons under Andy Reid. But until the unlikely run of backup quarterback Nick Foles late in the 2017 season, the Eagles always found a way to come up short of a championship. When it finally happened, the team’s fan base predictably went overboard with the celebration – as if football fans expected anything different.
