About the Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers Tickets
From their humble beginnings in the World Hockey Association (WHA) to modern times in the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers have been a hockey franchise for nearly 50 years. However, the team’s history over those four-plus decades is mixed, featuring both periods of great triumph and times of great struggle. Nevertheless, they are one of the most iconic and recognizable franchises in the NHL.
Early Days
The Oilers were founding members of the WHA, playing the inaugural season in 1972-73 as the Alberta Oilers before becoming the Edmonton Oilers. Success for the franchise did not come easy in the early days, as they made the playoffs four times in their first six seasons but were 3-16 in those playoff games. However, in what would be the WHA’s final season in 1978-79, the Oilers reached the Avco Cup Finals after finishing the regular season with the league’s best record.
The Dynasty
Edmonton’s strong season in their final year in the WHA set the stage for immediate success when they were absorbed by the NHL in 1979. A few years later in the 1982-83 season, the Oilers reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time. That set the stage for the team winning the Stanley Cup five times in the next seven years while also winning the Presidents’ Trophy twice in that span.
The NHL Hall of Fame officially certifies that era as a dynasty for the Oilers, who were led by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky during four of the five championships. With five championship banners hanging from the rafters, only the Penguins and Canadiens have won as many or more NHL championships since the league started to expand in 1967.
Dark Days
Of course, no dynasty lasts forever. The Oilers were good but not great for much of the 1990s and early 2000s. They even made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006, losing in seven games to the Carolina Hurricanes. However, after losing Game 7 to Carolina, the Oilers went 10 years before their next playoff game, putting together just two winning seasons during that decade-long playoff drought.
