About XL Center

XL Center

Located in the heart of Hartford, Connecticut, the XL Center is a multi-purpose arena and convention center that can host concert events and sports games ranging from NCAA collegiate and professional basketball and ice hockey. Capable of holding as many as 15,000-plus fans and surrounded by dozens of retail shops, the XL Center has been a major venue in central Connecticut and beyond for decades.

The History of the XL Center

Originally constructed in 1975, the XL Center was initially called the Hartford Civic Center. Back then, it had room for just over 10,000 fans. The venue immediately made news after its construction, but not for very good reasons. In 1978, following a massive snowstorm, the roof collapsed, though luckily no one was hurt. Renovations were undertaken, and the venue opened back up in 1980.

From there, the XL Center’s history is a lot less catastrophic. It’s been through a number of renovations since to keep up with the Joneses, with the latest happening in 2014 with full HD video screens, updates to the concourses and locker rooms, and a slew of other improvements that make this 45-plus-year-old venue looking brand spanking new.

What Makes XL Center Events So Special?

The XL Center is the best of the best when it comes to an older venue that’s kept up with the changing times. The old bones of the ’75 arena are still there, but they’ve got thoroughly modern trappings that means you’ll always be in for a great show, no matter what!
