About The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Cynthia Woods Pavilion
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, better known as the Cynthia Woods Pavilion or even just The Woodlands Pavilion, is one of the busiest outdoor amphitheaters in not just the United States but the world. This 16,500-seat pavilion and lawn, owned by a non-profit company, has seen just about every type of concert performance you can think of and then some!
History of the Cynthia Woods Pavilion
Opened in 1990, this outdoor venue was built initially both to provide a summer home for the Houston Symphony and to offer concert space for contemporary performers to the region. When it first opened, Cynthia Woods had space for 3,000 under its pavilion and another 7,000 on its lawn; the venue turned out to be so popular that it was expanded in 1994 and then again in 1998, 2000, and 2002. Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc with the Pavilion in 2008, but Cynthia Woods came back even stronger, adding even more seating capacity and designing a new canopy that could withstand 175-plus mph winds. There’s no keeping this venue down!
