The History of Jones Beach Theater
Like the park in which it’s situated, Jones Beach Theater was designed by Robert Moses and built in 1952. When it opened it featured an open-air 8,200-seat Greek amphitheater-style seating area and a stage, separated by a moat. Performers would pass through an underwater tunnel to reach the stage or arrive by boat, and the venue was used for musical theater performances regularly. In the 1990s the theater would be extensively rehabilitated to bring it up to more modern codes. This included the filling-in of that moat in order to provide additional seating, bringing capacity up to 15,000.
The theater has continually been updated to keep it modern. In the 2000s a secondary 5,000-seat general admission venue called the Bay Stage was added behind the concession area for smaller events. The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, which wrecked the venue pretty hard, required some serious refurbishment efforts. Meanwhile, a 2017 plan saw the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting, additional places to eat, larger concourses to reduce crowding, and many more improvements.
