About Kinnick Stadium

Kinnick Stadium

Kinnick Stadium is a college football stadium that’s located on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, Iowa. It serves as the home field of the Iowa Hawkeyes college football team. The stadium opened in 1929 under the name Iowa Stadium. The name was changed in 1972 to honor Nile Kinnick, a former Iowa player who won the Heisman Trophy in 1939 but died serving his country in World War II. Naturally, Kinnick Stadium has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years to help improve the facilities for both fans and players. The current capacity of Kinnick Stadium is over 69,000 fans.

Where are the Best Places to Sit at Kinnick Stadium

The Mediacom Outdoor Club offers the best seating available at Kinnick Stadium. All of these seats have armrests and chair backs and offer a great view of the entire field. Fans with club seats also have access to a climate-controlled lounge to help protect them from the elements. Outside of club seating, sections 125-128 and 104-107 are the best places to sit, as these sections are close to midfield. However, these sections have close to 80 rows of seats, so not all seats are created equal. Obviously, some fans want to be as close to the field as possible, although rows 15-30 will offer the best view of the entire field.

Tips for Visiting Kinnick Stadium

Fans visiting Kinnick Stadium should know that there isn’t a lot of parking available immediately around the stadium. However, there are plenty of options for fans to park for free and either walk or take a shuttle to the stadium. For tailgating and other pre-game activities, Melrose Avenue is the best place to visit in the hours leading up to kickoff. Melrose Avenue is also where team buses arrive for the Hawk Walk two hours before game time. Also, there is a bronze statue of Nile Kinnick outside the south end of the stadium, as well as other statues inside the stadium, so walking around the concourse before the game isn’t a bad idea either.

Food to Try at Kinnick Stadium

At Kinnick Stadium, the most delicious and unique item you’ll find is a pizza cone, which is exactly what it sounds like and can be found at Kono Pizza on the main concourse. It’s also impossible to go wrong with the cheeseburgers and hot dogs at Kinnick Stadium, especially the chili cheese foot-long hot dogs.
