About White Sox vs. Tigers

White Sox vs Tigers Tickets

It doesn’t matter what sports you’re talking about, teams from Chicago and Detroit are almost always going to have a rivalry. That is certainly the case with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. Both have been members of the American League since 1901 and have shared the AL Central division since 1995, so they’ve had over a century to get to know each other. Over the years, there’s been some bad blood between the Tigers and White Sox, and not always the metaphorical kind.

White Sox vs Tigers

The Tigers are White Sox were involved in one of the most famous brawls in baseball history. It happened during an April game in 2000 when Detroit’s Jeff Weaver hit a batter. An inning later, Chicago’s Jim Parque responded in kind by plunking Dean Palmer, who charged the mound without hesitation. Both dugouts were emptied almost immediately with multiple scuffles breaking out over the course of several minutes. It also wasn’t the last confrontation between the two teams that day. In the end, 16 players, coaches, and managers were suspended for a total of 82 games, the biggest punishment in baseball history.

When the two teams aren’t going at it with their fists, both have a lovely ballpark to call home. The White Sox play at Guaranteed Rate Field, which originally opened as Comisky Park in 1991. While old, the park has a lot of history and character, including several sculptures of White Sox legends from Carlton Fisk to Frank Thomas to Jim Thome. The Tigers, meanwhile, have the slightly newer Comerica Park, which is located in downtown Detroit and promotes a family-friendly atmosphere with both a carousel and a Ferris wheel.
