Most Broadway plays and musicals would be grateful to get one Tony. A Tony, if you don’t know, is like the theater version of a Grammy or an Oscar, though some would argue its harder to get. The show with the most Tony’s is The Producers, but The Band’s Visit isn’t far behind. While the Producers has 11 of the coveted awards, The Band’s Visit has ten. And, who knows what the future will hold? Even the world-famous musical, Cats, has fewer than this Broadway newcomer. Is your interested piqued? It should be!

Awards Aside, What’s It About?

Now that you know how renowned the show is, let’s talk about what happens on stage. It’s a little bit like a mix between the Music Man and Come From Away, but with its own individual twist. The people of a small town were minding their own business, going about their days, when all of a sudden a big band arrives. No one knows where they came from – including the band, they’re lost and need a place to rest.

While the band sorts itself out, they start playing music for the people of this town, giving the residents an infusion of music and energy they didn’t know they needed. Relationships are made, songs are sung, and people (including the audience) have an all-around good time.
