About Pine Knob

DTE Energy Music Theatre

Once the largest open-air amphitheater in the United States, the venerable and venerated DTE Energy Music Theatre, located just 40 miles from Detroit, Michigan, is one of the most famous and well-frequented outdoor concert venues ever. Here’s what you need to know about this very special place.

History of the DTE Energy Music Theatre

Opened in 1972, the DTE Energy Music Theatre has seen it all. Originally known as Pine Knob Music Theatre because it was so close to the Pine Knob ski resort, the name changed in 2001 when DTE Energy bought naming rights – but most older fans still just call this place “the Knob”.

This venue has been renovated and updated over the decades to bring it into the modern era. Several refits have seen state-of-the-art sound systems, video screens, and other amenities added so that contemporary music acts can give their fans the concert of their lives.

Who Has Played at the DTE Energy Music Theatre?

The list of luminaries that have played at this venue is astronomical. A better question and one that’s easier to answer might be “who hasn’t played at the DTE Energy Music Theatre?” For more than 40 years, this amphitheater has attracted all the big-time acts of the day. We’re talking Eddie Money, Chicago, Linda Rondstadt, Bob Seger (the street the venue is on is named after him), Kid Rock, Bob Dylan, Diana Ross, and more. It’s also a music festival mainstay – Lilith Fair, the Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest — it goes on and on and on.

What Makes DTE Energy Music Theatre Events So Special?

DTE Energy Music Theatre events are always a fantastic time. Thanks to its large capacity of around 7200 pavilion seats and space for another 8000 on the lawn you can make a day of it. The best part? You’ll never be out too late at a DTE Energy concert. Because of a local noise ordinance, all shows have to be over by 11 PM. Just in time for the after-party!
