About McKale Center

McKale Center

The McKale Center is an indoor sports venue that’s located on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. It first opened in 1974 and primarily serves as the home court of the Arizona Wildcats college basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics teams. The arena is named after J.F. “Pop” McKale, who was the athletic director at Arizona from 1914 to 1957 and also coached football, basketball, and baseball at Arizona. Meanwhile, the court inside the McKale Center is named for longtime Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson and his wife Bobbi. For basketball games, the McKale Center has a capacity of over 14,600 fans, making it the second-largest basketball arena in the Pac-12.

Where are the Best Places to Sit at the McKale Center

For basketball games at the McKale Center, sections 3 and 15 are ideal because they are located in the middle of the court. Meanwhile, sections 4 and 5 are located behind the Arizona bench, while sections 1 and 2 are located behind the visiting team’s bench. Sections 101 and 115 also offer a great view of the entire court but are located on the second level of the arena.

Tips for Visiting the McKale Center

Arizona basketball games are frequently sold out or close to sell-outs, so arriving early to beat the rush is never a bad idea. Those who arrive early also have a better chance of finding free street parking within a few blocks of the arena or in the neighborhood directly east of the McKale Center. It’s also advisable for fans to check out the Hall of Champions inside the McKale Center. This is where you’ll see jerseys from some of Arizona’s legendary players, including those from the 1997 national championship team. Visitors should also know that fans are frequently on their feet during games, especially at the start of each half until the first basket of the half is made.

Food to Try at the McKale Center

In addition to typical stadium food like pizza, burgers, hot dogs, and nachos, there is a large variety of local dishes available. For instance, Dutch Eatery and Refuge is one of the most unique vendors in a sports venue, offering sandwiches, wraps, and mini Dutch pancakes. There is also a heavy Southwest flair to the selection, including burros and churros.
