About Saints vs. Commanders

Saints vs Washington Commanders Tickets

In sports, it’s not only games that can link two teams forever. Sometimes, off-field events can connect two teams and create friction. This is the case with the New Orleans Saints and Washington Commanders. The two teams have never had much of a rivalry on the field. But whenever they play one another, it’s impossible for fans not to think about the trade the two teams pulled off during the 1999 draft for running back Ricky Williams.

Saints vs Washington Commanders

Mike Ditka, who was the head coach of the Saints in 1999, wanted Williams so much that he traded away every pick the Saints had in the draft, plus two draft picks the next year, to Washington in order to move up from the 12th pick to the 5th pick to take Williams. Needless to say, the trade didn’t exactly work out for New Orleans. Williams spent just three seasons with the Saints before he was traded to the Dolphins. Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders made good use of those extra draft picks to select several notable players, including LaVar Arrington.

Over two decades later, the memory of that trade has faded a little. But it’s a trade that will never be forgotten completely. The trade has its own Wikipedia page and is still regarded as one of the worst trades in NFL history. Whenever the Saints and Washington Commanders cross paths at either the Superdome in New Orleans or FedEx Field in Washington, it’s impossible not to remember the infamous trade.
