Sweeney helped to lay the foundation at Fresno State for the Bulldogs to become a perennial bowl game participant under his successor Pat Hill. Under Hill, the Bulldogs were among the top-three teams in the WAC virtually every season. In 2012, under head coach Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State moved into the Mountain West and immediately became the top dog in that conference. That success continued under Jeff Tedford, who guided the Bulldogs to a 12-2 season in 2018. That year finished with Fresno State ranked no.18 in the polls, the best finish in program history at the Division I level.
