Built By Bobby
Florida State had a winning football program practically from the start. But it was Bobby Bowden who made it one of the all-time best. Bowden took over in 1976 and almost immediately made the Seminoles a powerhouse. By his fourth season at the helm, FSU had become a top-10 team and played in the Orange Bowl. In 1982, Bowden and the Seminoles began a run of consecutive seasons in a bowl game that lasted until 2018. Florida State was also undefeated in bowl games during the first 14 years of that streak.
Into the ACC
In 1992, Florida State was invited to join the ACC. By that point, Bowden had turned FSU into a well-oiled machine. In their last five seasons as an independent before joining the ACC, the Seminoles were 53-8 and finished every season in the top-5. It was more of the same in the ACC, as Florida State won the conference title in its first nine years and 12 of its first 14 seasons in the ACC. Along the way, Bowden and company also captured two national championships.
The Challenge Ahead
When Bowden retired in 2009, Jimbo Fisher took the reins, keeping FSU’s bowl streak intact and winning the 2013 national championship. But after Fisher’s exit in 2017, the Seminoles experienced true adversity for the first time in decades. However, given the history of the program, it’d be crazy to think that Florida State won’t get back to the top of the mountain someday.
