About the Citadel Football

Citadel Football Tickets

Everybody knows that the South is crazy for college football, and that includes the Citadel Bulldogs of the Southern Conference. As an FCS program, it’s usually possible to find cheap Citadel football tickets. However, that doesn’t mean that the Citadel doesn’t have a proud football tradition because nothing could be further from the truth. The Bulldogs have spent nearly a century in the Southern Conference, developing intense rivalries and occasionally competing for championships. They are also one of the best at the FCS level of attracting large crowds, as last-minute Citadel football tickets remain in high demand.

A Little Success

Citadel got its first true taste of football success in the early 1960s under head coach Eddie Teague. During the 1960 season, the Bulldogs enjoyed an 8-2-1 record that included a win in the Tangerine Bowl, the only bowl game in program history. The following year, Teague led Citadel to its first Southern Conference championship. However, it would be 31 years until the Bulldogs won another conference title. In 1992, Charlie Taaffe coached the Bulldogs to the Southern Conference title. That season also included a trip to the FCS Playoff Quarterfinals, the best finish in program history.

On the Rise Again

In recent years, Citadel has enjoyed renewed success under Mike Houston and Brent Thompson. In 2015, Houston led the Bulldogs to another Southern Conference title and a spot in the FCS Playoffs, snapping a 23-year drought for both. When Houston left after that season, Thompson took over and led the Citadel to another conference title and Playoff appearance in 2016. The Bulldogs finished that season ranked in the top-10 among FCS teams. It was undoubtedly a high point for Citadel football and a sign that greater things are possible for the Bulldogs in the future.
