About The Book of Mormon
Book of Mormon Tickets
When you hear the names Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the first thing that likely comes to mind is South Park. But these two have also stepped outside the boundaries of cartoonland and made a name for themselves in theater with the decidedly uncensored The Book of Mormon. This popular musical production has won nine Tony Awards and generated more than $500 million in revenue worldwide. Not bad for a pair of middle-aged goofs, eh?
The Long Road to Broadway Greatness
The story of how The Book of Mormon came to be starts back in 2003. Parker and Stone had just seen Avenue Q, an off-Broadway (and off-color!) musical comedy that served as an adults-only satire of kids’ entertainment like Sesame Street. The two couldn’t get enough of it and immediately met with the show’s creator, Robert Lopez, to collaborate on a new project.
The seeds planted during those early meetings would eventually blossom into The Book of Mormon, and in 2011 the show hit the ground running on Broadway. It was an instant smash hit, garnering critical acclaim and selling out the Eugene O’Neill Theater for weeks. It wasn’t long before both US and international tours were roaming the world, bringing this raucous musical comedy to anyone and everyone with a solid sense of humor.
What Is The Book of Mormon About?
Why have international audiences fallen in love with The Book of Mormon? It’s no mystery: the show is damn funny, but it’s got a lot of heart, too. The story follows a pair of Mormon missionaries sent to a remote Ugandan village to proselytize their faith. As their journey progresses, the show provides plenty of laughs but also showcases the realities of life for non-Americans living in countries like Uganda.
It sounds bizarre, but it works. Even the actual Church of the Latter Day Saints tolerated the show, eventually taking out advertising space in the musical’s Playbill. It’s rare that an obvious parody not only makes you laugh uproariously but also makes you think deeply – but that’s just what The Book of Mormon does. It’s also one of the best pieces of work that Parker and Stone have ever created, likely to leave a legacy lasting longer than any episode of South Park.
