Jack Hughes' Olympic Gold Goal Sent Devils Ticket Prices Soaring

by Rikki Bleiweiss

When New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes slipped the puck five-hole past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington 1:41 into overtime on Sunday, clinching Team USA's first men's hockey gold medal since the 1980 "Miracle on Ice," the celebration didn't stop in Milan. Back home, fans rushed to Gametime to catch Hughes' homecoming in person.

Gametime data shows that Devils ticket purchases spiked dramatically in the hours following the gold medal game, with transaction volume more than 10x higher than a typical day. The demand surge hit prices hard, too: the get-in price for the upcoming Sabres @ Devils game more than doubled, jumping from $22 before the gold medal game to $50 as of Monday — a 127% increase.

This kind of demand spike is typically reserved for playoff runs and championship celebrations. Hughes, who lost two teeth taking a high stick in the third period before scoring the tournament-winning goal in overtime, capped an Olympic run in which he tied for the team lead with seven points. His performance, and the electric image of a gap-toothed, bloodied Hughes raising his arms in celebration, instantly became one of the defining moments of American hockey history.

For Devils fans, there's no better time to see Hughes play than right now.
