About the Illinois Basketball
Illinois Basketball Tickets
If you’re looking for one of the most underrated college basketball programs, consider the Illinois Fighting Illini. You might think that finding cheap Illinois basketball tickets is an easy task, but not when you consider the history of the program. The Illini is among the top-15 programs in both all-time wins and winning percentage. The orange and blue have put together some of the most memorable seasons in college basketball history. If you ever get the chance to score last-minute Illinois basketball tickets, don’t let the opportunity slip through your fingers because this is a storied program.
The Two Trailblazers
Illinois had a fair amount of success during the first half of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until head coach Harry Combes took over in 1947 that the program started to become a force. The Fighting Illini won three Big Ten titles in Combes’ first five seasons, finishing third in the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons.
Combes helped set the stage for Lou Henson, who spent 21 seasons at Illinois, starting in 1975. Under Henson, Illinois started to become a mini-factory for NBA talent. Once he got the Illini rolling, the team went to the NCAA Tournament 11 times in 13 seasons. That era included the famous Flyin’ Illini team of the 1988-89 season that took Illinois to the Final Four for the first time in over 35 years and finished the season 31-5.
Bill & Bruce
The Fighting Illini began a golden era in 2000 when Bill Self was hired as the head coach. Self went 78-24 in his three seasons at Illinois, winning either the Big Ten regular-season or tournament crown each season. He set the stage for Bruce Weber, who took Illinois to the Sweet 16 in 2004 and then was at the helm for perhaps the greatest season in school history the following year. During the 2004-05 campaign, the trio of Dee Brown, Deron Williams, and Luther Head nearly led Illinois to an undefeated season. The Fighting Illini finished 37-2, losing in the national championship game but forever making their mark on the college basketball world.
