About the Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans Tickets

The Tennessee Titans have been a football team in one form or another since 1960. The team was founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers of the AFL and moved to Tennessee after the 1996 season. After a pit stop in Memphis, the team settled in the state capital of Nashville and adopted the name Titans in 1999.

Days in the Oil Field

The Oilers played their first AFL season in 1960 and immediately won league championships in their first two years of existence, beating the Chargers in the AFL Championship Game in both 1960 and 1961. In 1962, they fell short of a three-peat, losing to the Dallas Texans in the championship game in double-overtime.

To date, those remain the only two championships in franchise history. However, well-renowned coach Bum Phillips had many good years in the 1970s, taking the Oilers to back-to-back AFC Championship Games behind Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell. The Oilers were also one of the better teams in the AFC in the late '80s and early '90s while Warren Moon was the team’s quarterback, but they never played in a Super Bowl during their time in Houston.

The Music City Miracle

Head coach Jeff Fisher took over late in the team’s tenure in Houston and saw them through their move to Tennessee. Following the 1999 season, the team’s first in their new stadium, the Titans reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. That Super Bowl journey was helped along by the Music City Miracle, the most famous play in Titans history involving a lateral pass on a kickoff return for a touchdown that gave Tennessee a playoff win over Buffalo.

Unfortunately, the Titans lost that Super Bowl to the Rams and haven’t been back since. The Titans enjoyed many good years under Fisher but could never get over the hump. They’ve also struggled to replace him, reaching the playoffs only once since letting go of Fisher following the 2010 season.
