About the Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders Tickets
If you can set aside the naming controversy that's surrounded the Washington Commanders in recent years, you’ll find one of the oldest franchises in football and one that has experienced a significant amount of success throughout its history – even they've also lived through dark periods and controversy as well.
The Early Days
The Washington Commanders franchise began all the way back in 1932. They spent one year as the Boston Braves and then four as the Boston Redskins before moving to Washington in 1937. The Washington Commanders won the NFL championship in their first season in Washington and then again in 1942 before undergoing an extended period of incompetence both on and off the field throughout the 1950s and '60s.
Win with Gibbs
Despite making four straight trips to the playoffs, including a Super Bowl appearance, under George Allen in the '70s, it was Joe Gibbs who turned the Washington Commanders around after he took over as head coach in 1981. In 12 seasons with Gibbs at the helm, Washington made four Super Bowl appearances and won three. Their Super Bowl wins came all within a 10-year span and were lead by three different quarterbacks: Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien.
The Snyder Days
After the passing of longtime owner Jack Kent Cooke in 1997, the Washington Commanders was sold to Daniel Snyder in 1999. In addition to selling off the naming rights to Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, Snyder has overseen the organization for two lackluster decades. During Snyder’s first 20 seasons as owner, the Washington Commanders have won just three division titles and two playoff games.
