About the Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates Tickets
Ahh, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team that got its name by literally being accused of stealing a player from another team. The history of the Pirates leaps right out of the pages of history, beginning life as the Allegheny Base Ball Club of Pittsburgh in 1882 and getting its nickname for “piratical” recruitment practices in 1890 when they scooped Lou Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics. And thus a legendary team got its legendary name – and established the Pittsburgh-Philadelphia rivalry that, in some form or another, seems to have existed forever. Go, Pirates!
A Tough Little Team From the Get-go
From the early 1900s, the Pirates were a tough team. They dominated the National League from 1901 to 1903, winning three consecutive pennants. And in 1909 they would bag their first World Series win versus the Detroit Tigers, before taking a winning break in the 1910s.
The Roaring Twenties were the Pirates’ decade once again, with NL pennants in 1925 and 1927, not to mention yet another World Series win in 1925. This time, Pittsburgh took out the Washington Senators for top honors, cementing their future legacy as a winning franchise no matter what hardships they face.
And Faced Them They Did
Let’s be honest – there was one hell of a slow point in Pittsburgh’s history. The Pirates had a real slump in the mid-20th century, not coming back to the World Series again until 1960. This lit a fire in the hearts of players and fans alike, and the Pirates blasted through the 1970s with two more World Series wins in 1971 and 1979.
From then on, the Pirates have had a tough row to hoe. For brief periods in the early 1990s, the team would show signs of that old fire by winning Eastern Division titles, but it wouldn’t be until 2013 that the team would return to the post-season.
Franchise Firsts
Whether the Pirates are on top of the world or fighting to get out of the doldrums, their long history means the franchise has set a slew of MLB firsts. They were the seventh MLB team to reach 10,000 wins in 2013 and the fourth to reach 10,000 losses in 2015.
Historically the Pirates have been always first – they played in the first MLB game ever broadcast on the radio, first to win a World Series on a home run, first to play in a World Series night game, first to pull off a combined extra-innings no-hitter, and (maybe most importantly) the first team in baseball to have a Black coach and manager, and – in 1971 – the first to have an opening lineup composed of 100% minority players.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the Pirates play?
The Pirates have played at PNC Park since 2001 when Pittsburgh city planners decided their old home, Three Rivers Stadium, was just too old, ugly, and hard to get to for the 21st century. Nobody argued with the fact – Three Rivers was a nightmare – but it sure had its charm. No lie, PNC Park is nice and modern, but a lot of old Pirates fans miss that nostalgic monstrosity.
When do Pirates tickets go on sale?
Pirates tickets go on sale before the MLB begins its regular season. In fact, Pirates tickets are often available months in advance. That goes for away games as well as those being held PNC Park.
Is it better to buy Pirates tickets in advance?
With both home and away Pirates tickets being available so far ahead of opening day, it’s easy to buy tickets whenever you want to. Believe it or not, though, you may not even need to plan that far ahead. You can often get great and cheap last-minute tickets to Pirates games by waiting to make your purchase until the very last minute. The reason this works is that ticket sellers will almost always drop their prices as game day gets closer.
What’s the best way to buy cheap Pirates tickets?
The best way to buy cheap Pirates tickets or really any cheap last-minute sports tickets is always going to be from the types of services that connect fans and resellers online. These ticket marketplaces have some of the most attractive ticket prices. Can you buy Pirates tickets at the stadium? Sure – but you’re not likely to find the best deal that way.
