About the Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns Tickets
It’s hard to find a pro sports franchise that has been the butt of more jokes than the Cleveland Browns. Poor, poor Browns. The team – and their fans – have had a tough go for a long, long time. But despite the team’s record, it hasn’t been all bad for the Browns.
Quick Out the Gate
The Browns were founded in 1946 as one of the original members of the All-America Football Conference. They won the AAFC Championship in all four seasons of the league’s existence before moving to the NFL in 1950. While the league may have changed, Cleveland’s winning didn’t. The Browns played in the NFL Championship Game seven times between 1950 and 1957, winning the title three times.
So Close But So Far
After the 1962 season, team founder and namesake Paul Brown was fired by owner Art Modell, who had purchased the team the prior year. The Browns managed to recover from the change-up, winning the NFL Championship in 1964 behind legendary running back Jim Brown. It would be the team’s last championship.
In the decades that followed, the Browns would experience heartbreak every time they came close to winning another title. In ‘68 and ‘69, they lost the NFC Championship. Between ‘86 and ‘89, they reached the AFC Championship Game three times, only to lose all three meetings to the Denver Broncos.
The Biggest Loss of All
Cleveland’s toughest loss came in 1996 when Modell packed up the franchise and moved to Baltimore, starting anew as the Ravens. For three years, the city of Cleveland was without a football team. Fortunately, the NFL brought the Browns back as an expansion franchise in 1999, restoring the team’s entire history despite its three missed seasons.
Of course, the reincarnation of the Browns was nothing like the old Browns. While the original Browns fell short in the postseason, the new Browns fell short on a weekly basis. In their first 20 years back in the league, the Browns had just two winning seasons and one playoff appearance. In half of those seasons, the team lost at least 12 games, including a 1-15 season in 2016 and a winless 0-16 season in 2017, making the Browns the laughing stock of pro sports. But there’s always next year… right?
