About the San Francisco Giants

San Francisco Giants Tickets

If we’re talking MLB history, we’re talking San Francisco Giants. As one of the oldest teams in the league, the Giants have dominated baseball from coast to coast throughout for years. Simply put: they're a force to be reckoned with – boasting 28 National League wins, 20 World Series runs, and 8 championships.

The Early Days: 1883 to 1958

The team was founded as the New York Gothams in 1883, but would take on a new name as the Giants in 1886 after a major win against the Phillies. Legend has it that Gothams manager and co-founder Jim Mutrie burst into the locker room after the game, shouting “My big boys! My giants!”

The name stuck, and the New York Giants would go on to play a major role in the early history of the MLB. Some of baseball’s most dramatic moments have come from the Giants, including 1951’s “shot heard ’round the world,” when Bobby Thompson’s walk-off home run in the ninth inning won the team the pennant. Or “The Catch,” when Willie Mays made nabbed an over-the-shoulder fly ball in Game One of the 1954 World Series against the Cleveland Indians.

Pulling Up Stakes and Heading West

The 1958-59 season would be the last time the Giants would grace the East Coast. The following year both the Giants and fellow NY team the Dodgers made an unprecedented move West to California. Today, the New York Giants legacy lives on in the “NY” logo script adopted by the Mets when they were formed in 1962 to honor this legendary team.

Moving to California wasn’t without its downsides for the now-San Francisco Giants. Early performance was less than stellar, as the Giants found it a struggle maintain their winning disposition. And then things changed in 2010 when the team took the championship. Over the next four years, San Francisco would win the World Series two more times, dominating the first half of the decade.

The Giants and the Dodgers: A Legendary Rivalry

No discussion of MLB rivalries would be complete without acknowledging the Giants’ beef with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With both teams starting out in New York and relocating to California in the same year, the Giants have plenty in common with their LA counterparts.

The Dodgers’ early post-relocation success left the Giants in the dust for decades, fueled the rivalry for both teams. Now it seems the tables have turned, and with the Giants exploding back to action in recent years, it’s Dodgers fans who are feeling the heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Giants play?

The Giants play their home games at Oracle Park, the stadium that replaced San Francisco’s legendary Candlestick Park in 2000. While it’s still less than 20 years old, this roughly 41,000-seat stadium has been known by three other names in its short life: Pacific Bell Park, SBC Park, and AT&T Park.

When do Giants tickets go on sale?

Given that the MLB schedules its regular season games well in advance, the Giants have their schedule set long before they ever hit the field. This means you can find Giants tickets for both home and away games for the entire regular season. There are even some Spring Training games you might be able to check out!

When is the best time to buy cheap Giants tickets?

There’s no rush when it comes to picking up Giants tickets. With 41,000 seats at Oracle Park, you’re not going to run into a situation where the entire stadium’s sold out during the regular season, even if the Giants end up playing the Dodgers. This makes waiting until the last minute a great strategy for buying cheap Giants tickets — one that can save you a bunch of cash.

What’s the best way to buy cheap Giants tickets?

Why is waiting to the last minute the best way to buy cheap Giants tickets? Because the majority of MLB seats are sold by resellers who pay wholesale prices for those tickets. Resellers use marketplace sites like Gametime to move their tickets. If they want to at least break even, they need to sell as many tickets as possible — and that means dropping the price like a stone the closer it gets to game time. Waiting til the last minute to buy tickets on a marketplace grants you access to these great prices!

Why should I choose Gametime over another ticket reseller?

You’ve got a choice when it comes to ticket marketplaces — so, let’s help you make the right one. Gametime has the best prices on cheap Giants tickets thanks to our super low service fees. Not only that, but our virtual seating chart for Oracle Park and any other venue, show you the view from your chosen seat before buying, without all that frustrating online sleuthing.
