About the Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens Tickets

Considering they haven't been around very long, the Baltimore Ravens have done all right for themselves. The franchise was born out of the remnants of another team and named after a grisly poem by one of the city’s native sons. But the Ravens have managed to put much of that behind them and let their play speak for itself.

Stolen from a Rival

The Ravens came to life in 1996 after owner Art Modell decided to move the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. The move was devastating for Browns fans, who have hated the Ravens on principle ever since. And Baltimore sports fans can relate – they saw the Colts leave for Indianapolis a decade earlier and had been waiting for a team to return to the city ever since. Baltimore came up short in the 1993 battle for a new expansion franchise, so when Modell moved out of Cleveland and landed in Baltimore, the city could not have been more excited to see the NFL back in town.

Defense Wins Championships

It took a few years for the Ravens to find their footing after the move, but over time they built an outstanding defense behind Hall of Famer Ray Lewis. In 2000, that defense carried the Ravens to a win Super Bowl XXXV, giving up just 23 points in four playoff games after a 12-4 regular season.

Defense continued to be a big part of Baltimore’s success when John Harbaugh became the new head coach in 2008. Harbaugh's hiring as head coach coincided with the arrival of quarterback Joe Flacco, and things really started to heat up. With a boost from the offense, Harbaugh and Flacco led the Ravens to five straight playoff appearances, winning at least one playoff game each year. That five-year stretch culminated in a win in Super Bowl XLVII, giving the Ravens their second world championship in their 17th season as a team.
