About the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys Tickets

Whether you love them or hate them, you have to admit the Dallas Cowboys are a special team. After all, most pro sports franchises don’t have the moniker of ‘America’s team.’ And most definitely don’t have a handful of championship banners and an owner as recognizable as the team’s logo.

Becoming America’s Team

It only took the Cowboys two Super Bowl championships to earn the title of America’s Team. Sportscaster John Facenda first used the nickname during a highlight film of the 1978 season. He commented that the Cowboys were on television so frequently that fans recognized them as easily as celebrities or politicians. Dallas had lost the Super Bowl that season to the Steelers, but they also won two Super Bowls earlier that decade behind quarterback Roger Staubach.

The Legendary Lineage

While the Cowboys have had more than their fair share of Hall of Fame players, the franchise has largely defined by its big-name coaches. From their inaugural season in 1960 all the way to 1988, the Cowboys were coached by the incomparable Tom Landry. During those 29 seasons, Landry led the Cowboys to 20 straight winning seasons and the first two Super Bowl wins in franchise history.

When Landry was fired soon after Jerry Jones bought the team, Jimmy Johnson took the reins. The Cowboys went 1-15 in Johnson’s first season at the helm, but he ended his five-season tenure with the Cowboys by winning back-to-back Super Bowls, leaning on the amazing trio of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin.

What Have You Done For Me Lately?

Even though they still go by the name America’s Team, the Cowboys haven’t exactly lived up to the hype over the past couple of decades. Since their win in Super Bowl XXX, the Cowboys haven’t reached the NFC Championship Game, much less another Super Bowl. They’re just 4-10 in playoff games over the last 25 seasons.

Cowboys fans have waited patiently for much of the decade for head coach Jason Garrett to return them to the promised land. Amid a series of ups and downs, Jones has stuck by Garrett’s side, hoping that the one-time Dallas backup quarterback can be the one to guide the Cowboys to their sixth Super Bowl win in franchise history.
