About Aladdin
Aladdin Tickets
There are several ways for fans to enjoy the story of Aladdin. There is the 1992 animated movie, the 2019 live-action adaption, and even the original folklore tale from the One Thousand and One Nights collection. But it’s important not to forget the Broadway musical Aladdin, which made its debut in 2011. Since then, the musical has been seen by tens of millions of people all over the world and has become the highest-grossing Broadway performances of all-time.
Humble Beginnings
Unlike many musicals that have gone on to have great success, Aladdin didn’t premiere on Broadway, nor did it quickly move to Broadway after appearing off-Broadway. The production made its debut in 2011 in Seattle of all places, although it included actor Jonathan Freeman in the role of Jafar after he voiced the character in Disney’s animated version. From there, Aladdin moved to cities like St. Louis, Ivins, Utah, and international locations like Bogotá, Colombia, Manilla, Philippines, and ultimately Toronto.
It wasn’t until March of 2014 that Aladdin finally made its debut on Broadway. It was soon nominated for five Tony Awards and one Grammy with actor James Monroe Iglehart winning Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the Genie. From there, Aladdin continued to grow in popularity on a global scale with shows in Australia, Japan, and throughout the United States that continue today both on Broadway and in various cities from coast to coast.
A Little Extra
While the original Aladdin movie from 1992 won two Academy Awards and four Grammy Awards for its music, Aladdin tickets to the Broadway musical gives fans unique versions of those songs, as well as new songs not heard in the movie. Of course, classics like “One Jump Ahead,” “Friend Like Me,” and “A Whole New World” are part of the stage performance. But there are also songs like “Diamond in the Rough” and “Somebody’s Got Your Back” that were written specifically for the musical, as well as songs that were cut from the original movie but brought back when the musical version of Aladdin was written. To put it another way, you haven’t seen the real Aladdin until you’ve seen the Broadway musical.
