The Early Days

The Packers have a football history that actually predates the NFL. The franchise got its start in 1919, playing under head coach Curly Lambeau, for whom their stadium is named. For their first two seasons, Green Bay faced off against other independent football teams located throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, owning a 19-2-1 record over those two years. Soon enough, the Packers joined the NFL and became the first-ever team to win three consecutive NFL championships from 1929-1931. The franchise would go on to win six NFL championships under Lambeau, who walked away following the 1949 season.

Unfortunately for Lambeau, he’s been somewhat overshadowed by another legendary Green Bay coach, the great Vince Lombardi. Although he only spent nine years with the Packers, Lombardi guided Green Bay to five titles, including the first two Super Bowls, which is why the Super Bowl Trophy still bears his name.

 

Still a Force

The post-Lombardi years in Green Bay didn’t go all that well on the field. However, the dedicated and tight-knit fan base has always stuck by the team, helping spur a resurgence in the early 1990s that has carried through to today. The Packers have reached the playoffs 19 times in the last 26 seasons, a stretch that includes a dozen division titles and two Super Bowl wins, leaving little doubt that in a century of playing football, the small-town Packers are one of the most iconic franchises in professional sports.
