More About the Sacramento Kings
California definitely loves its sports teams – in particular, its NBA teams. The Lakers and Clippers dominate in Los Angeles, while the Bay Area boasts the winning Golden State Warriors. And Sacramento… they’re home to the Kings, representing the state in its capital city.
An Oldie and a Goodie
The Sacramento Kings, believe it or not, are one of the oldest pro ball teams in the nation. The franchise has one hell of a history, tracing its origins back to the East Coast as New York’s Rochester Seagrams in 1923. A name change in 1945 saw the creation of the Rochester Royals, a real monster on the court, who won the NBA championship in 1951.
But Rochester was just too small a city for these ballers. The team relocated in 1957 to become the Cincinnati Royals and again in 1972, splitting their time between Kansas City and Omaha as the Kings. They settled in Kansas City in 1975 and stayed there for a decade. It was only in 1985 that the Kings would finish their westward travels, coming to rest in Sacramento, where they play today.
Moving Ever Forward on a Rough Road
Let’s be real: it’s tough being a Sacramento fan sometimes. It might be easy to get cheap Kings tickets (because the team hasn’t bagged an NBA championship since it was in Rochester), but the Sacramento Kings have a lot of heart and they’ve never given up, even when it seems like everything’s against them.
The team has certainly struggled to find its identity, and it took until the late ‘90s before the Kings showed any signs of dominance. But the franchise came alive after it brought on players like Chris Webber, Jason Williams, and Vlade Divac. For the first time in a long time, the Kings were garnering more than just hometown interest! Into the early 2000s, Sacramento was hot property as a result, performing well enough to earn shots at the division finals.
The Struggle Is Real
Post-2004, the Kings hit another slump despite the bright promise of the years preceding. What followed was a major restructuring effort that has continued into the late 2010s, and has yet to hit pay dirt for the franchise despite best efforts. If there’s anything this team has in it, though, it’s the will to survive the struggle and come back out on top.
The Sacramento Kings are still likely a few years out from becoming contenders again. But it’s only a matter of time – they’ve done it before, and they’ll do it once more.
