More About the Orlando Magic
Bursting onto the scene as an expansion team in 1989, the Orlando Magic quickly became one of the most competitive franchises in the NBA. More than a few legends of the court have worn a Magic jersey during the team’s short history, including monsters like Shaq, Penny Hardaway, Patrick Ewing, and more – and as a result, the Magic has one of the most coveted records for a team of any age.
Brilliance Right Out of the Gate
Most expansion teams will take a decade or more to start putting up winning seasons, but the Magic got right down to business. Their 1992-93 season saw them not just making their first appearance in the playoffs but also scoring a perfect .500 with 41 wins and 41 losses. The next year was even better, as they made it all the way to the NBA Finals, even if they did ultimately lose to the Houston Rockets.
Their early success was no fluke, though. From 1995 to 2012, the Magic would only miss going to the playoffs five times. Even today, their record stands as the second most successful of NBA expansion teams from the same year, just after fellow Florida franchise the Miami Heat.
A Blip on the Radar
Despite their successes, it’s true that the Magic have experienced a bit of a slump lately. They missed the playoffs six years in a row and have gone through an intense rebuilding process – especially after the loss of Dwight Howard. But things are looking up for the Magic once again as they returned to postseason play in the 2018-19 season, making it to the first round of the playoffs once again.
This is good news for Magic fans in Orlando and beyond – a sign that the team is returning to the brilliant performance of the past leaving behind a brief blip of a drought. There’s no doubt that, in the coming seasons, the Magic will be back to their old tricks again!
