More About the Minnesota Timberwolves

1989 was a big year. The Berlin Wall fell, Die Hard was theaters, and it cost less than a dollar for a gallon of gas. Even better than all that, though: 1989 was the year the Minnesota Timberwolves got their start. That’s right, this NBA expansion team has only been around for three decades, but they’ve still made a major mark on the world of pro basketball.

The Roaring Nineties

It’s natural for new expansion teams to have it rough in the beginning. The Wolves were no different, but things picked up for this Minnesota franchise starting in 1995 with the drafting of Kevin Garnett. Suddenly, the Timberwolves came alive, spending the rest of the nineties and well into the new millennium as major contenders. In fact, from 1997 through 2004, the Timberwolves qualified for the playoffs eight times in a row. Not bad for a team that still had its shrink-wrapping on.

Modern Problems

The Timberwolves got their first tastes of success early and often, but all good things come to an end. After missing their shot at the 2005 postseason, the wind seemed to leave the Wolves’ sails, and they slipped into a major drought. The slump was made worse when Garnett was traded to the Celtics, leaving Minnesota without its perennial MVP. The franchise wouldn’t make a postseason appearance again until the 2017-18 season.

But the Timberwolves haven’t been resting on their laurels all this time. Their recent return to playoffs prominence was due in part to some major restructuring and rebuilding, instilling hope in Timberwolves fans that the franchise isn’t done yet. Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: this pack of Wolves is due to take down some bigger prey.
