About the Detroit Pistons
Detroit Pistons Tickets
Detroit’s a tough city. It’s been through a lot but doesn’t take any guff from anyone. Is it any surprise, then, that the Detroit Pistons are just like their hometown? The team might not have the most NBA Finals wins under its belt, but it’s never given up and never backed down – and that goes back to the very beginning.
The Early Days of the… Fort Wayne Pistons?
The Pistons haven’t always been a Detroit team. Once upon a time – before the NBA existed – Fort Wayne, Indiana was home to a local company called the Zollner Corporation, which made pistons for car engines. As a result, the Zollner Pistons of Fort Wayne, Indiana were born one bright day in 1944 when they joined the National Basketball League.
The Pistons of the NBL were no slouch. They won the championship both their inaugural year and again in 1945. In 1948, the team switched leagues to the Basketball Association of America, the NBL’s rival league. The next year, Fred Zollner (of the Zollner Corporation, of course) was instrumental in the merging of both the BAA and the NBL, giving birth to the NBA. The Pistons were there from the start.
Moving on up to Detroit
The Pistons moved from Fort Wayne in 1957 in search of a bigger market. Zollner moved the team to Detroit, keeping the Pistons name since Motor City was also a town of automakers. The post-move Pistons had an uneven time settling into their new digs. Despite having some true superstar players like Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, and Bob Lanier, the team as a whole just didn’t jive, which led to less than stellar performances.
Finally, Zollner bailed as the owner in 1974, paving the way for new owner Bill Davidson to take over. The next few years were dark, but 1981 saw the team’s fortunes turn around, sparked in no small part by Isiah Thomas coming aboard that year. The team fought like hell through the rest of the ‘80s, earning a reputation as scrappers. Throwing basketball great Dennis Rodman into the mix in 1986 didn’t hurt!
Today’s Pistons
It hasn’t always been easy, but today the Detroit Pistons are back in the saddle like never before. You don’t make it to six Eastern Conference finals in a row from 2003 to 2008 without knowing how to play, after all. Even with some faltering in the early 2010s that led to more rebuilding efforts, Detroit has never given up on the Pistons, and the Pistons have never shirked from working hard to regain and keep their contender status!
