About the Ottawa Senators
Ottawa Senators Tickets
It’s unusual for a franchise to be both young and old at the same time, but that’s the truth for the Ottawa Senators. Confused? Let us explain. The Senators became an expansion team in 1992, making them one of the younger teams in the NHL. However, they also have a separate history that dates back to the years 1883 through 1934. In that sense, they're one of the NHL’s most unique and storied franchises.
Almost Prehistoric
Back in 1883, the Senators were a club team in the Ottawa community. They were strictly an amateur team for many years but gradually moved up to the professional ranks over time. In 1909, the Senators joined the National Hockey Association, which ultimately became the NHL in 1917. In 1934, the franchise relocated to St. Louis and dissolved one year later. However, the Senators are credited with winning 11 Stanley Cups prior to 1934 as either a professional or amateur team.
Born Again
The Senators rose from the ashes in 1992 when they became an NHL expansion franchise. As is often the case, the team struggled in its first few years, not making the playoffs until its fifth season and not winning a playoff series until its sixth season. But the Senators started to catch up with the rest of the league before the turn of the century, winning four Northeast division titles between 1999 and 2006 and then winning the Presidents’ Trophy and reaching the Stanley Cup Finals (but losing to the Ducks) in 2007.
Unfortunately for the Senators, that Stanley Cup loss has been the peak of the franchise. In the 12 seasons to follow, Ottawa failed to make the playoffs six times. The Senators won just three playoff series during that time despite a run to the Conference Finals in 2017. Compared to the glory days back in the 1920s and 30s, the modern-day Senators remain very much a work in progress.
