About the New York Rangers

New York Rangers Tickets

The New York Rangers have nearly a century’s worth of history behind them. One of the Original Six, the Rangers made their NHL debut in 1926 and have been setting records ever since, starting with the honor of being the first American team in the league to take home the Stanley Cup in 1928.

From then until 1940, Lord Stanley’s cup would go home with the Rangers twice more. And then another kind of record was set — the longest gap between Stanley Cup victories ever. This massive gap came to define New York hockey for decades, and it wouldn’t be until 1994 that the Rangers would once again be ultimately victorious.

The Islanders Put their Foot in It

The Rangers tried their hardest to break their bad luck streak for years. They even came close a few times and made it to the Finals in both 1972 and 1979, before being overcome by what many began calling “the Curse.” The arrival of another New York NHL team in the 1970s, the Islanders, just made things worse.

The local rivalry between the Rangers and the Islanders reached fever pitch in no time. The Isles won four Stanley Cups in a row during the ’80s — a rough stretch for diehard Rangers fans who stayed loyal to their original NY team. Still, it sure hurt whenever Islanders fans would chant “1940!” during Rangers games in true hockey goon style. There’s truly no love lost between these two metro NY area hockey teams.

The Post-Curse Rangers

Bad luck can’t last forever, though, and the Rangers' curse was no different. Mark Messier’s Rangers, with the help of Mike Richter and Brian Leetch, took the 1994 Finals from the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games after taking out the Devils in the conference final. The Rangers were back in a big way and made up for lost time, signing Wayne Gretzky in 1996.

The Great One also helped the Rangers pave the way to the Conference Finals in ‘97, until he hung up his jersey in 1999. The post-Gretzky years were a bit rocky, but the Rangers came on strong after the 2004-2005 NHL lockout, making it all the way to the Finals once again in 2014. While the Kings took the Stanley Cup home that season, the strength and resilience of the Rangers mean it won’t be another 50+ years before skating to NHL Finals victory once more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Rangers play?

The Rangers play their home games at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden, an indoor arena venue that’s seen some of the most historic sports teams and concerts of the 20th and 21st centuries. The history of the Rangers and MSG goes back to the very beginning — in fact, they were originally named “Tex’s Rangers” in honor of their founder, MSG president Tex Rickard.

When do Rangers tickets go on sale?

The NHL schedules their hockey seasons well in advance, which means that Rangers tickets are available long before the start of the season. This way you can pick and choose which Rangers games you’d like to attend, either home or away, with no time constraints whatsoever.

When is the best time to buy cheap Rangers tickets?

With plenty of lead time to buy Rangers tickets, there’s hardly any rush. With Madison Square Garden boasting nearly 20,000 seats, it’s super rare that even a Rangers-Islanders game gets sold out, so you can safely wait to the last minute before picking up your seats. In fact, the best time to buy Rangers tickets is often right at the very last minute!

It sounds strange, but it’s true — and it’s all due to how tickets are sold. A huge chunk of Rangers tickets are picked up by resellers at wholesale prices, so they’re able to offer cheap tickets for resale. The closer it gets to the game, the less these resellers charge because they need their tickets to sell. Otherwise, they lose out on their own investment by having to eat the cost of the ticket themselves. That’s why waiting until the very last minute is the best way to get the best prices on Rangers tickets.

What’s the best way to buy cheap Rangers tickets?

Ticket resellers almost always use online ticket marketplaces to sell seats. This means that if you want the most affordable Rangers tickets, you’ve got to go where the resellers are. The same holds true for all kinds of event tickets — not just hockey. Unless an event is entirely sold out, your best bet for the cheapest tickets is visiting a ticket marketplace like Gametime.

Why should I choose Gametime over another ticket reseller?

There are lots of online ticket marketplaces out there, but Gametime works hard to make sure we’re providing hands down the best experience. You can buy Rangers tickets at the cheapest possible price anywhere thanks to our super-affordable service fees, which makes our tickets as cheap as they come. On top of that, we offer innovative perks like a virtual seating chart, so you can see what your view of the ice will be from the seats you’re buying, and all before you put down your hard-earned cash.

We’re so sure our experience is better than the others that we guarantee we’ll get your Rangers tickets to you in time for puck drop. Game on.
