You know which two artists aren’t often compared to each other, but should be? Donald Glover and Aubrey Drake Graham (who you know as Drake). Why? The two both started out on television shows, built up their talents and following, then started a rap career. They’re relatively the same age (Glover is older by three years) and are both wildly successful.

The biggest difference between them is that Donald Glover is now a producer as well as an actor, and Drake hasn’t created his own TV show (yet). Early Life, Stand-Up, Community

Donald Glover, who only goes by Childish Gambino in his musical endeavors, was born in California to an Air Force family. However, he spent most of his youth in Stone Mountain, which is a suburb about 20 minutes out of Atlanta. He notes that he was one of the only black kids he knew in that town, which is one of the things that gives him his unique perspective and comical commentary on race.

He performed in productions at his local high school and then studied at New York’s Tisch School of the Arts. Before college graduation, he was already working in TV, as a writer for 30-Rock, Tina Fey’s NBC Masterpiece. That experience got him a slot to try out for Community, a show that stands the test of time (Hulu) and is still funny today. During his time on Community, which ran seven seasons, he started writing music and put out Camp in 2011.

Award Wins and Box Office Picture Roles

Gambino has only put out three albums at the time of this writing, but he’s had at least double that amount of Grammy nominations, three of which resulted in wins. While all that was happening, Gambino was writing and starring in his show, Atlanta. Somehow, at the same time, he was playing roles in both Lion King and the movie Solo. Donald isn’t one to forget his fans. Even with all he has going on, he still makes time to tour and sell-out shows.
