About the Vancouver Whitecaps

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Tickets

As a sports fan, there's nothing better than seeing your team work hard, develop, and finally win. Fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps know that feeling quite well, having watched their team grow and graduate from an under-the-radar team to join Major League Soccer in 2011.

First Frozen

The first time a team played under the Whitecaps name was in 1974. That team played in the North American Soccer League until the league folded in 1984. During that time, though, the Whitecaps became so popular that by 1983 they outgrew the 32,000-seat Empire Stadium and moved into BC Place, which was new at the time.

In 1986, pro soccer returned to Vancouver in the form of the Vancouver 86ers. But by 2001, the Whitecaps began their comeback. After playing in multiple leagues, the Whitecaps ended up in the United Soccer League First Division, claiming the league’s championship in both 2006 and 2008. With on-field success and great crowds, MLS took notice and made the Whitecaps an expansion franchise.

Everything’s Melting

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the team, Vancouver’s transition to the MLS hasn't been an easy one. In their inaugural MLS season in 2011, the Whitecaps only won six of their 34 games, finishing last in the league in points. Things got marginally better with two trips to the Western Conference Semifinals in 2015 and 2017 and a surprising run to the CONCACAF Champions League Semifinals in 2016. However, the Whitecaps missed the MLS Playoffs in four of their first eight seasons, struggling to find consistent success. That said, Vancouver remains near the top of MLS in attendance, proving that the Whitecaps have a fan base that’s thrilled to see their team compete at the highest level.
