About the New Jersey Devils

New Jersey Devils Tickets

Few NHL teams have experienced the extreme highs and lows of the New Jersey Devils. And few teams in any sport have moved around as much as the Devils have. Through it all, they're the only pro sports franchise that proudly uses New Jersey in its name and proclaims that they call the Garden State home.

Midwest Roots

The history of the New Jersey Devils began in 1974 when the franchise spent two seasons playing as the Kansas City Scouts. They then moved further west to Denver, becoming the Colorado Rockies (not to be confused with the baseball team of the same name) from 1976 to 1982. During the eight seasons the franchise spent in Kansas City and Colorado, they made the playoffs just once.

Garden State Success

Eventually, the franchise made its way to New Jersey in 1982 and rebranded as the Devils, named for the mythical Jersey Devil that was said to make its home in southern New Jersey. The team spent their first quarter century in New Jersey playing at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, the same stadium where the NFL’s Jets and Giants play. It was only at the start of the 2007-08 season that the Devils moved to their current home in Newark.

Much like during their time in Kansas City and Denver, success was rare for the Devils in New Jersey. The team failed to qualify for the playoffs in their first five seasons, but things finally started to turn during the 1987-88 season when the Devils had their first winning regular season in franchise history. That season they ultimately reached the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the Bruins in seven games.

To the Top

The Devils got back to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1994, losing to the rival Rangers in seven games. However, the following year, the Devils won the Stanley Cup for the first time, sweeping the Red Wings in the Finals. New Jersey’s ascent up the NHL’s hierarchy would continue for the next decade. The team reached the Stanley Cup Finals three times in four seasons, including titles in both 2000 and 2003. The Devils currently have three championship banners hanging from their rafters despite reaching the playoffs just once since a Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Kings in 2012.
