About Nassau Coliseum

Nassau Coliseum

One of the oldest concert halls, sports venues, and convention centers in the US, the Nassau Coliseum, located just miles from Queens, is one of New York’s premier places to catch a show or a game. Anyone who’s everyone has either played or performed at this East Coast mainstay, and it’s a testament to its popularity that it hasn’t been torn down and replaced with a more modern venue!

History of the Nassau Coliseum

The Nassau Coliseum is a dinosaur in comparison to most modern venues, as this indoor multi-use arena opened its doors all the way back in 1972, making use of more than 60 acres of a former US Air Force base outside of Hempstead, Long Island. The place has undergone three major renovations in its lifetime, each noticeably bigger than the past, culminating with the most recent and almost complete redesign and overhaul in 2017.

This venerable venue has seen literally dozens of teams call it home, though it’s best known as the place the NHL’s New York Islanders have played since 1977. The Islanders have come and gone and come again in their time due to relocations and renovations, just as other major sports teams like the New York Nets.

The Coliseum is also a favorite on the pro-wrestling circuit, with the WWE holding some 30-odd years of events there over the years. To top it off, Nassau Coliseum is also an incredibly popular concert venue with greats like Elvis (yes it’s that old) to Bruce Springsteen and beyond all playing there over the years.

What’s so special about Nassau Coliseum events?

Nassau Coliseum events are noteworthy because there are just so damn many. You can find something for everyone here, whether it’s a concert, a trade show, a pro sports game, or anything else. The fact that the Coliseum underwent an absolute no-stone-unturned refurb just a few years ago means that this venerable venue is about as modern as it can be, transforming what would have been an early-70s nightmare into a modern dream come true!
