About Camp Randall Stadium

Camp Randall Stadium

Located on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wisconsin, Camp Randall Stadium is a major open-air football stadium capable of hosting more than 80,000 rabid, screaming fans. With its conventional north-south alignment and its 880 feet above sea level elevation, this venerated and venerable venue is the oldest in the Big Ten Conference.

History of Camp Randall Stadium

Camp Randall Stadium was originally opened in 1917, making this venue more than 100 years old. The land it’s built on has served as a football field for even longer – from at least 1895 – and the field itself is named after a Union Army training camp that dates to the Civil War.

When the stadium originally opened, it held just barely over 11,000 seats. Over the decades, though, this venue grew bigger and larger, with seats and amenities being added constantly to keep it modern and comfortable. Today, the newest renovation occurred in 2005, making Camp Randall Stadium a thoroughly modern football field.
