History of the Shoreline Amphitheatre

Construction for The Shoreline Amphitheatre started in 1985 and finished in 1986. The very first performance on this grand stage was carried out by the comedian Rosanne Barr, who opened for Julio Iglesias in June 1986. The Shoreline Amphitheatre offers an outdoor stage that holds 22,500 fans. However, if the parking lot is utilized, attendance can reach 30,000. The Amphitheatre offers 6,500 reserved seats, closer to the main stage, and 16,000 general admission seats, located on the lawn around the stage.

Tons of shows have graced the stage at this remarkable venue over the years. However, music festivals such as The Lilith Fair, Ozzfest, Rock the Bells, Uproar Festival and Vans Warped Tour are probably the most common event at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

What’s So Special About the Shoreline Amphitheatre?

The Shoreline Amphitheatre is a historical venue not because of the resemblance to The Grateful Dead’s “steal your face” logo, but because of its location. It turns out the entire area was built on a landfill. During its opening year, someone dropped a cigarette lighter which triggered a fire due to the methane gas leaking from the ground. The city found new ways to improve methane monitoring and a more efficient way to extract methane.
