About Scotiabank Saddledome
Scotiabank Saddledome
North of the border and just east of the mighty Rocky Mountains sits the city of Calgary. Nestled in south-central Alberta, Canada, Calgary has a lot going for it – least of which is the brilliantly designed Scotiabank Saddledome, a one-of-a-kind indoor multi-use stadium that has seen its share of events. From concerts and hockey games to Olympic competition to even annual rodeos, the Saddledome has seen it all and then some!
The History of the Saddledome
The Saddledome’s history stretches back to the early 1980s when the city of Calgary put in a successful bid to host the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. The existing venues in the city weren’t up to snuff for such an event, and a push to construct a new complex resulted in the Saddledome opening in 1983 with plenty of time before the Olympics. The arena was updated in the 1990s as well, with the addition of dozens of new luxury suites, seating for more than 1000 additional fans, and other amenities like better parking and even a new restaurant.
The Scotiabank Saddledome’s main tenant is the Calgary Flames, proudly dominating the ice at the venue since its opening day. The Saddledome also famously hosted the ice hockey and figure skating competitions of the ’88 Olympics and is the home of the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League.
Besides Scotiabank Saddledome sports events, the venue is a major attraction for other types of entertainment. The Moody Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rod Stewart, and other top names have performed there over the years. Another regular occurrence, the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede rodeo show, has been using the Saddledome for decades as one of its main venues.

Scotiabank Saddledome events are noteworthy because of the venue’s unique design. The literally saddle-shaped concrete roof is iconic and award-winning, and it’s nearly 20,000-seat capacity makes it one of the largest arenas in the region.
