Erwin Jr. Center, sometimes called the Event Center or just the Frank Erwin Center, dominates the local landscape. For more than 40 years, this nearly 18,000-seat capacity indoor event center has been home to countless sports and concert events. Even as it nears the end of its life cycle, the so-called “Superdrum” stands tall and proud!
The History of the Frank Erwin Events Center
With construction starting in 1974, the Frank Erwin Events Center opened its doors for the first time in 1977. It was just known as the Special Events Center at that time, though its name would change in 1980 to honor Frank Erwin, a University of Texas regent who recently passed away. The venue was updated and renovated, first in 2001 and then in 2003, to keep up with the times, adding digital scoreboards and better seating options, which kept it well updated into the 2010s and beyond. Meanwhile, in 2018 it was announced that construction would soon begin on a new facility to replace the Events Center, though the process would take several years.
