About Amon G. Carter Stadium

Amon Carter Stadium

Everything’s bigger in Texas – we say it all the time. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is proof of that, with it being one of the biggest metroplex cities in the world. Smack dab in this urban magnificence on the Fort Worth side of the line is Texas Christian University, also known as the home of Amon Carter Stadium, a little outdoor football stadium with a big attitude.

The History of Amon Carter Stadium

The story of Amon Carter Stadium can be traced back to 1923 when a grant was given to the college for a new library. The library was constructed on the old football field, so TCU naturally saw it as a perfect opportunity to put a nice stadium up! The result was that Amon Carter Stadium opened its doors in 1930 with a capacity of 22,000.

With the college growing throughout the decades, and with football growing in popularity, like it only could in Texas, soon the stadium became too small. What followed was a series of renovations and refurbishment efforts to increase the capacity of Amon Carter Stadium up to its present capacity of 47,000, though there have been record-breaking games played at the stadium that exceeded 50,000 screaming fans. Not bad for a 90+-year-old venue!

Amon Carter Stadium is one of the most recently-renovated outdoor stadiums in the NCAA. In fact, the latest set of serious reno work took place in 2010-2011, making this effectively a brand-new stadium with lots of great history!
