About Jo Koy
Jo Koy Tickets
Jo Koy hasn’t always been the funny man who can sell out big arenas within days of announcing a tour. He was once a young half American half Filipino boy whose mom made him take fragrant Asian food to school. Which wouldn’t have been so bad, except it was in a re-purposed plastic container.
He got part of his sense of humor, which he uses to talk about his experience of growing up as bi-racial from his dad and his stage name, Jo Koy, from his aunt. His given name is Joseph Glenn Herbert, but his aunt used to call him “jo ko”, which means “my joseph” in Filipino. He misunderstood her and heard Koy – and has been using that stage name ever since.
Humble Beginnings
Jo moved to Las Vegas, NV to be near his grandmother when she was sick and enrolled at the University of Nevada. After spending a little time in school he decided it wasn’t for him and dropped out to pursue comedy. He started at open mic nights then got a well-deserved break, with a regular job in a show at the MGM Grand. Once he had enough money from that, he rented out the Huntridge theater for himself and played a few solo shows.
Moving to LA
Jo was happy in Las Vegas until he was spotted by a talent agent and encouraged to LA, to appear on BET’s Comic View. From there he went on to be on shows like Chelsea Lately and even The Tonight Show. That was early on in his career. Now it would be easier to list the shows he hasn’t been on, as his resume grows significantly every year. Jo Koy has come a long way. From fighting for time at open mic nights to selling out tours – he deserves all the success he has.
