About the New York Giants

New York Giants Tickets

Among NFL teams in the northeast, no team has been around longer than the New York Giants. They joined the league in 1925 and haven’t looked back, winning four league titles during the pre-Super Bowl era and four championships during the Super Bowl era. That total of eight titles is surpassed by only two NFL teams, making the Giants one of the most storied franchises in league history.

What’s In a Name?

For the first few decades of the team’s existence, the New York Giants had the same name as a Major League Baseball franchise. Until baseball’s Giants moved to San Francisco following the 1957 season, there was no distinguishing the football Giants from the baseball Giants. So, in 1937, the franchise officially incorporated as the New York Football Giants, which remains their legal name. Even with nicknames like the “G-Men” and “Big Blue,” some still refer to the team as the New York Football Giants.

The 30-Year Drought

Despite having more championships than any franchise outside of the Packers and Bears, the Giants once endured a 30-year drought between titles. New York’s last championship before the AFL-NFL merger came in 1956 and they didn’t get their first post-merger title until Super Bowl XXI following the 1986 season. That Super Bowl win came in the midst of the Bill Parcells era, an eight-year period that included two championship wins.

While Parcells, who is commonly referred to as the Big Tuna, is one of the all-time great coaches, he had plenty of talent to work with during his time with the Giants. Quarterback Phil Simms, running back Ottis Anderson, and linebacker Lawrence Taylor were among the star players who led the Giants during the Parcells era.

Playing the Role of Kryptonite

It’s hard to deny that the New England Patriots have been the best NFL team during the 21st Century. That said, the Giants have been one of the few teams that have been able to stand in their way. The G-Men beat the Patriots in two memorable Super Bowls. First, it was a 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII that’s known best for the miraculous “Helmet Catch” by David Tyree. Next came a 21-17 win in Super Bowl XLVI that prevented the Patriots from finishing the season undefeated.

Of course, the Giants haven’t won a playoff game since that Super Bowl in the 2011 season. In fact, they’ve been one of the worst teams in football in recent years and have struggled to build a team that can consistently compete. But with such a rich tradition and loyal fans, it’s only a matter of time until the Giants make their way back to the top of the NFL.
